Laia is a Scholar. Five hundred years ago they were enslaved by the Empire. Now she must fight back after her grandparents are killed and her brother is imprisoned. So she begins spying on the Commandant of Blackcliff a Academy for the Resistance.
Elias has just finished training to become a Mask. They are one of the deadliest forces in the Empire. But that is not the life her wants. He wants to desert and go live in the free lands but then an important decision is placed before him that changes everything.
I thought this book was absolutely fantastic! It definitely lived up to the hype surrounding it.
The characters were so diverse. You have Laia, the unexpected hero of the story. Elias, the should be bad guy. Sweet and innocent Izzi, mysterious Cook, cold blooded Commandant… So many amazing characters!
The one bit I thought took away from the story was the attempt to add romance. Laia is torn between feelings she has for Elias and Keenan, a member of the Resistance. Keenan understands her, what she’s lost and what she’s been through. But Elias awakens something in her that she’s never felt before. It was all kinda corny and unnecessary in my opinion. But that’s just me.
