Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan; 492 pages

Wow that’s a long book title.

On his 16th birthday, Magnus Chase Wales up to a friend telling him that people are looking for him. He’s in trouble. So naturally he breaks into his uncle’s house, goes on a wild ride, and dies.

And then he comes to in Valhalla.

First, chapter titles. It had chapter titles and that made me so happy!! And they were hilarious! I would crack up from some of them alone! “Come to the Dark Side. We have Pop-Tarts!” Like what… What would make him think to make that a chapter title? Loved it!

Second, Magnus Chase. Fantastic character. The book is more or less his internal monologue as all the crazy shit that’s happening is happening. It was absolutely fantastic and funny! He’s such a witty and sarcastic character. And how did I not make the connection to Annabeth?! They have the same last name and I never even thought to connect the stories!

Third, the gods. What a riot! I thought the gods in his other books were good but these guys were great. They had even less regard for being godly than any other series. Thor was the best. All he cared about was catching up on Sherlock and watching Game of Thrones. I think I snorted at one point from trying not to laugh while on my lunch break at work.

This was a quick and easy read like usual. The story was fast paced and fun, the characters carried the story and there is a talking sword. How could it get any better? Except maybe Taylor Swift the dwarf …..

Loved this one. I can’t wait for The Hammer of Thor to come out this fall!

  1. I just read this one too! He just has the silliest stuff in his books, but it totally works 🙂 One of my favorite parts was when Jack the sword makes fun of a sword turning into a pen. I love when authors make fun of themselves 🙂 Glad you loved it!

      1. I just recently started reading his books so I’m playing catch up with a bunch of his series! I’ve read all of Percy Jackson and I’m making my way through The Heroes of Olympus! But I love his way of telling a story!
